Although this cartoon by Adams from The Daily Telegraph works on its own, it references this earlier cartoon, published on December 31st, in which President Obama is portrayed as Wile E. Coyote suspended in mid air over the fiscal cliff.
Tuesday night's vote in the House of Representatives to approve a Senate bill to avert the dreaded fiscal cliff is being hailed as a victory for Obama. However, Obama's victory fell short of what he had campaigned for, and came at a high cost. As the LA Times explains:
... the terms of this compromise guarantee another pitched battle over spending and taxes within months. (...) The persistent battle over spending, which already has consumed Washington for two years, threatens to block Obama's other major legislative priorities, including immigration reform and gun control. Moreover, to get a deal, Obama had to accept far less new revenue than he had wanted.
In the cartoon, Obama has crashed into the bottom of the canyon, symbolizing the fact that he has not come out of this crisis unscathed. The 'Result!' exclamation and thumbs up gesture are at odds with the reality of the situation and suggest that the President is in denial when he insists the result was a success.
