Rough seas forced divers to postpone their search for more than 200 migrants still unaccounted for after their boat sank off southern Italy. Rescuers have so far found 111 bodies, and 155 people have been pulled alive from the seas 1km (half a mile) from the island of Lampedusa. Full story >>
The cartoon by Chappatte in "Le Temps", Geneva shows twelve bodies floating in the water. In fact, they are supposed to represent the European flag (which consists of twelve yellow stars on a blue background). The cartoonist seems to be suggesting that it is EU immigration policies which are ultimately responsible for the disaster. As Italy's interior minister commented when he arrived on the island of Lampedusa, "This is not an Italian tragedy, this is a European tragedy."
Sink is an irregular verb - sink, sank, sunk. • The boat sank after being hit by strong waves. • This is not the first boat carrying migrants from Africa to Europe to have sunk.
