The cartoon by Paul Thomas from the Daily Express shows a flood scene. A man, who is being evacuated in a rowing boat, is telling his employer on the phone, "I'm taking the day off work due to seasickness." The joke is that you don't normally get seasick in a rowing boat.
1. Seasickness is feeling ill/sick or wanting to vomit when you are travelling on a boat or ship.
2. A rowing boat is a small open boat that you move using oars. ('Rowing' rhymes with 'going'.) The verb is to row.
3. If you take a day off, you decide (or ask permission) not to go to work (or school). • She took two days off work because her child was ill.
4. Due to means the same as 'because of'. • The project had to be abandoned due to a lack of government funding.
