Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond was facing the biggest political challenge of his career last night after a brutal Westminster intervention left his plans to share the pound after independence in tatters. The Conservatives, Labour and the Liberal Democrats joined forces yesterday to categorically rule out joining a currency union with an independent Scotland. Now that Scotland looks unlikely to keep the pound if they vote for independence, they will have to find a plan B (= an alternative solution). One option would be to join the euro, which is why Salmond is heading for Brussels — to woo the EU. The fact that today is Valentine's Day no doubt inspired the cartoonist to feature flowers and chocolates.
