The government has revealed that public sector workers will be given a 1 per cent pay rise. Doctors, dentists, members of the armed forces and senior civil servants will be among those who will receive an increase from April 1. However, those working in the NHS who already receive a 'progressional pay increase' (typically around 3 per cent) will not receive a rise while around 400 senior NHS managers will not be given any pay increase at all. The cartoon by Paul Thomas from the Daily Express is set in a dentist's surgery. The dentist is about to start drilling on a patient's tooth. The latter tells him, "Before you start, I definitely think dentists deserve more than a 1% rise..."
The patient is worried in case the dentist takes out his frustration at getting such a small pay rise on him, so he wants to show that he is sympathetic to the dentist's situation.
