In this cartoon by Mac from the Daily Mail, a man arrives home drunk after a night out on the tiles. His battle-axe of a wife is waiting for him on the stairs (only the rolling pin is missing) — and she does not look best pleased. The man tells her, "Don't look so cross. I've just saved 20p."
In order to 'save' 20p, the man must have drunk 20 pints of beer, which is a lot but far from impossible.
Cross means the same as 'annoyed' or 'quite angry'. • I was cross with him for being late for the meeting.
