The cartoon by Peter Brookes from The Times shows Iranian President Hassan Rouhani talking on the phone with a bewildered-looking President Obama. However, he's not discussing the Iraq crisis but ordering a "quarter pounder cheeseburger with large fries".
Rouhani demonstrates his new-found enthusiasm for America by ordering a McDonald's. In fact, using McDonald's as a symbol of peace is not so far-fetched. In The Lexus and the Olive Tree, Thomas Friedman predicts the demise of war with globalization, “No two countries that both had McDonald’s had fought a war against each other since each got its McDonald’s.”
I was looking for a word to describe someone who is a fan of America but there's no obvious one (like Francophile or Anglophile). However, see here for some suggestions and an interesting discussion.
