David Cameron was forced into a humiliating apology yesterday after his former spin doctor Andy Coulson was found guilty of conspiracy to hack phones. In an extraordinary day, which saw former News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks cleared of all charges after an eight-month trial, Mr Cameron was accused of bringing ‘a criminal into the heart of Downing Street’. The Prime Minister delivered a ‘full and frank apology’ for hiring Coulson as his director of communications in 2007, just months after he had resigned as editor of the News of the World over an earlier hacking scandal.
