With the US election just one day away, here are a couple of somewhat similar cartoons that sum up what has been an extraordinarily dirty campaign, even by American standards. The first is by UK cartoonist Brian Adcock from The Independent, and the second by American political cartoonist Sean Delonas.
To fully understand the cartoons, you have to be familiar with the concept of 'mudslinging' or 'throwing mud'. These are metaphorical expressions that mean 'the use of insults and accusations, especially unjust ones, with the aim of damaging the reputation of an opponent'. • The compliments followed a nasty debate in which both candidates slung a lot of mud at each other. The second cartoon also calls to mind the expression 'to wallow in mud', which is what pigs are supposed to love doing. • Hillary made the decision not to wallow in the mud with Trump. She presented herself as presidential. The mud metaphor also features in this cartoon by Rick McKee.
• Which cartoon do you prefer and why?
• What seems to be the attitude of the cartoonist towards the two candidates?
