After the success of Real Grammar – a series featuring 10 grammar topics that people are often uncertain about – the Macmillan Dictionary website has now launched Real Vocabulary. In this new 10-part video collection, author Scott Thornbury will discuss common misconceptions about certain vocabulary questions such as "When do you say awesome?" and "Can you grow a company?"
In the videos, Scott will explain whether these usages are acceptable. Meanwhile, on the accompanying blog, Editor-in-Chief Michael Rundell will follow up each video with a post about a similar topic, explaining which vocabulary 'rules' should be followed – or ignored.
You can watch one of the first videos below, and read the accompanying blog post here. There is also a classroom poster with 10 quiz items about grammar and vocabulary which you can download from the resources page. And you can test your knowledge of real 21st century vocabulary by doing the quiz (I got nine and a half out of ten, by the way. Not that I'm boasting or anything).
