This cartoon by Mac from The Daily Mail shows a couple of British tourists eating at a Greek taverna. They are surrounded by the cook and a couple of waiters, who all look longingly at the man's plate. The woman tells her husband, "Don't be so mean, Bernard. Give them a bit of your souvlaki!"
VOCABULARY
Souvlaki a popular Greek fast food consisting of small pieces of meat and sometimes vegetables grilled on a skewer. It is usually served in a pita sandwich with garnishes and sauces, or on a dinner plate, often with fried potatoes. The meat usually used in Greece and Cyprus is pork, although chicken and lamb may also be used.
EXPLANATION
We are meant to suppose that the cook and waiters are hungry because their country is so poor as a result of the debt crisis. You could also see it as a metaphor for the EU, with the tourist couple representing the rich northern European nations, and the Greeks the poor south, begging scraps from the table.
